About the Archery Historian

The Archery Historian has always been fascinated by the bow and arrow. His father made him small self bows to play with when he was a child, and as he grew older he learned more about his Hungarian ancestors, the Magyars, and their use of the bow. Eventually, he was eager to study nearly all societies that have utilized the bow throughout their histories: The Ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Mongols, Huns, and Magyars to name but a few. It amazes him how a relatively simple invention, discovered at different times on all of the Earth’s continents except Australia, could have such prolific use and importance throughout history. Empires were forged by people who employed archers on the front lines.

The Archery Historian’s own personal collection of bows continues to grow, as he intends to have at least one bow to represent every major civilisation or group of people that used a particular bow throughout history. At the moment he is focusing on expanding his collection of bows from the renouned Hungarian bowyers Lajos Kassai and Csaba Grozer. Both Kassai and Grozer have bows that are designed from models that were used throughout history by prominent bow weilding peoples, such as the Huns, Magyars, Avars, Scythians, Mongols and Turks. His project; archeryhistorian.com is intended to promote learning and the practice of archery, especially with traditional and historic bow varieties.
