The Mary Rose Longbows
The Mary Rose
The Mary Rose Longbows give us a glimpse into the world of 16th Century English warfare. The Mary Rose was a warship of the English Navy of King Henry VIII. It was used in wars against France and Scotland for over three decades before sinking in battle on July 19, 1545, just north of the Isle of Wight. The sunken wreck of the Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 over 400 years later. She was raised from her watery grave in October of 1982 in one of the most expensive and difficult projects in maritime archaeology.
Thousands of artifacts from the era of Tudor England were discovered and of particular interest to our study, over 170 English Longbows as well as almost 4000 arrows and other archery-related artifacts. Archery was mandatory in Tudor England for all able-bodied men, and Longbows were used extensively in battle alongside more modern firearms. [1] The draw weight range of the Longbows recovered varied between 100 to 185 pounds at a 30-inch draw (the arrows found on board were 30 inches long).
